Skied S and W aspects at Helen Shoulder at and below tree-line. Ski quality was good in the morning but quickly deteriorated on S and SW aspects by 11:30
Sun affect caused rapid weakening of snow resulting in some unsupportive trail breaking and skiing. Expect a sun crust on solar aspects to 2400m or higher once temps cool again. Temperatures up to plus 2 degrees by shortly after noon. Winds in the trees were calm all day. Moderate winds observed at ridge top with increasing cloud throughout the day.
Experienced significant whumpfing and cracking. Tests at 2050m on SW aspect below treeline resulted in a moderate compression test "drop" (sudden collapse) down 40cm on the Feb 9 facet layer. Below this layer we observed very weak facets and depth hoar down to the November rain crust.
We didn't see any new avalanches on our tour or during the drive today. We did call it quits today by about noon due to the warming temps and moist surface snow, making skiing tricky and avalanche hazard more problematic.
More warm temperatures are expected tomorrow - Play safe!
