ACMG Mountain Conditions Summary for the Coast Ranges - July 30, 2021

As a habitually suspicious species, we humans tend to feel "the grass is always greener"whenever we consider our own situation in life. But I'm suggesting that, at least as far as mountain conditions go, that it simply doesn't get any better than what we've got in our backyard right now. I've spent most of the last month in the Boundary Range around Stewart and, having just done a 3-day smash and grab in the Tantalus Range, I can offer a broad perspective on Coastal conditions.

WEATHER

It was hot again this past week which continued to melt away any snow up high, and overall has made the ice faces look like mid August, not mid July. Having said this, a report from the Mt. Alberta hut near the Columbia Icefields this AM (~2750m) said there was 5cm fresh snow at the hut, was cold today, and that snow wasn't really melting.

ACMG Mountain Conditions Summary for the West Coast - July 15, 2021

We’re in full summer mode now and if you’ve been wanted to get up into the alpine there’s no time like the present.

Glaciers:
Despite the amazingly warm weather the glaciers along the Sea-to-Sky have fared reasonably well. Sun cups have continued to develop but are not overly large, coverage on the glaciers is surprisingly good and crevasse bridges have been strong. This has all combined to offer good travel. Of course things change rapidly and I expect the continued heat will really start to take its toll as the days go by.

The heat dome may be leaving us soon, but its results will be with us for awhile.

WEATHER
It's been sunny and hot for the past week, with record-setting temperatures throughout the mountain ranges. For example, at Parker's Ridge at 2300 m there have been overnight lows of 20 degrees, and highs approaching 30. Banff and Jasper both broke all-time high temperature records on Monday, and then again on Tuesday (39C / 102 F at my house in Banff).

ACMG Mountain Conditions Summary, Coast Range – June 24, 2021

With some crazy hot weather in the forecast it looks like the summer is here in force.

Conditions:

There’s still lots of snow in the mountains here at the Coast. A few weeks behind where we typically are by this time of the year. That’s great in some areas where the snow allows for quick and easy passage over talus and scree and good coverage on glaciers. However, it also means that there’s still lots of movement in the alpine with lots of rock fall and loose wet avalanches during the heat of the day.

Regional Mountain Conditions Report for the Coast Range of BC - June 17, 2021

Oh, weather. June has performed typically thus far with convective showers persisting across much of the Coast. The weather has behaved like a deranged maniac, stumbling all over the place with persistent drizzle, pockmarked with short-lived periods of sun, then followed by gale force winds ushering in the next batch of weirdness. And it looks like more of the same is on the way based on what I see on the various forecasts I use. None of the models really agree but it seems that the further north on the Coast you are, the more likely you will see rain this weekend.
