Windslabs Building, But Great Skiing (and Getting Better)
Steep Creek, Duffey Lake Area
Out for a personal overnighter. Today found great skiing treeline down to 1700 m on North to west aspects. Only a few cm of snow overnight but strong winds at ridgetop led to both natural and skier triggered Size 1 to 2 avalanches from the many groups out today. See attached photo of a toe triggered partial burial above the saddle west of the hut just over 2000 m elevation.
Snowing 2cm per hour when we left the area, and conditions could get interesting if this continues. Though the forecast doesn’t appear to be too precipitous. Avalanche Canada has downgraded their hazard ratings for this area tomorrow, and it seems about right.
The Hut was reasonable last night but 40 odd folks there tonight will be tight!
Enjoy!
