Guided a group of 4 at Bald Hills today and found the snow to be exceptionally challenging. Snow BTL is unsupportive, moist and shallow, making for arduous trail-breaking and impossible skiing. It is best to stick to the trail, both skiing up and down at BTL. The main tree run is unskiable at this time.
Snowpack at TL is about 80cms and has a semi-supportive crust on solar aspects (only supportive on an uptrack). Shaded TL slopes are still unsupportive with the weak FC/DH layer creating a major upside-down snowpack.
ALP slopes are wind-hammered with just a trace-3cms of new snow sitting atop a K-hard windslab. The supportive snow created the best skiing and we were able to ski slopes up to 40 degrees in the lower ALP.
We felt one whumph while traveling across the flats in upper TL, but otherwise no signs of instability and no recent avalanche activity. Weather was generally calm with BKN skies, S-1 in the AM and -1C. When the sun did come out, it was very strong; however, temps remained just below freezing which helped to keep the few cms of HST dry. More snow (abt 10-15cm) fell around Medicine Lake area overnight.
