Trail Conditions

Went up to Smuts (Birdwood) Lakes today. Spectacular weather! The Commonwealth Creek trail is in great shape. The first section up to Smuts is full of Avalanche debris (from last spring's event). Seems that the trail through the debris is ok with some flagging (but still have to pay attention - easy way to blow a knee). I tried to do a bit of trail maintenance with my saw with the smaller trees that were still blocking the trail. Beyond that there is still a fair bit of of snow from a slide this spring and it's a bit treacherous to navigate in a few sections. Also, there is still some snow on the headwall section. The traverse up to Birdwood Pass (from Smuts Pass) is still snow covered, but a number of people have hiked up to the ridge so it doesn't seem to difficult (just take it slow an watch your footing). Some amazing wild flowers are starting to come out as well as the larches are starting to bud.
