Avalanche Conditions

Groups yesterday and today observed touchy conditions in the RMR Backcountry.

Widespread surface hoar (Jan 5) is now buried by a 40+cm Storm Slab that is reactive at Treeline and below in open areas that were previously heavily skied. Skier controlled avalanches on several well known test slopes were propagating widely, but did not step down to deeper layers.

Of note: Though Montana Bowl saw extensive skier traffic during each of the December high pressure windows, Kokanee Bowl has seen very few tracks... something to consider with the several deeper persistent weak layers.

For now, there is little reason to venture far from the excellent tree skiing options closer to the resort boundary.
