We just returned from four days spent between the Bow and Peyto huts on the Wapta Icefields.
Conditions are still very winter like above 2300m and apart from the uncertainty offered by the current avalanche conditions, the Wapta is in good shape. There is consistently over 300cm of snow on the glaciers and the cover seems more consistent than normal. The huts were busy with people heading off in every direction. Most people were avoiding large avalanche terrain that hadn't recently slid and overhead hazard such as cornices.
We observed several recent natural cornice failures, all of which triggered deep slabs on the slopes below. There was also a close call for a group near the summit of mount Habel who had a very large cornice fail near their feet and triggering a deep slab that ran over a ~150m cliff.
The skiing was generally good however the surface was moist to 2500m yesterday as we skied out.
