Climbing Conditions

We were on the Brazeau Icefield over the long weekend to celebrate Canada 150!

Travel conditions on the glacier were good, despite the warm temps. Temps were steadily above 0 degrees but travel was generally fast with good coverage and supportive snow. Foot pen was 10-20 cms on the main glacier. Crevasses were still well bridged. On the SE face of Mt Warren the snow was unconsolidated and wet, with foot pen up to 60 cms. Some wet snow avalanches 10-20 deep were point releasing from our footsteps. These slides started moving slowly but picked up a lot of mass as they thundered down the face. A group on Brazeau returned from the summit to find their ascent track covered by debris from a cornice fall.

The approach trail was straight forward with only a few stream crossings and old mud slides to deal with. We were happy to find some lingering patches of snow to lessen the scree slogging on the slopes up to the glacier.
