Poboctan and Brazeau Trail Network Report

Jasper / Banff National Park August 1-5, 2017

Trail Conditions

Hi Folks
Although a great part of the Poboctan and Brazeau trail network is shared by hikers and horses alike, the trails were in pretty good conditions.

As expected, some muddy sections exist, but none to severe. (Heavy rains could change this fast.)

Wet boggy areas and overgrown vegetation are part of the experience, on the trail section between Four Points Camp and Brazeau Lake Camp.
Some attention should be paid, as on this stretch are two to three minor re-routes.
In one of the boggy areas, ca 1.5 km north of four point camp, look for pink flagging tape, to find your driest way across this small trail portion.

Coming from Jonas Cutoff Camp side, trail braiding has caused two distinct approaches to Jonas Shoulder, when in the alpine meadows. Both will meet up in the end.
By staying on the left trail you will have to cross the meadows towards the right, were you will see a very defined trail leading up a steep scree slope, leading to the top.

Most campsites along this trail network are well maintained and clean. Thanks Parks!
It is also great to see backpackers practicing leave no trace camp ethics. Thanks.

All necessary bridges are in working order.

To avoid any confusion, the trail head for Poboctan Creek trail is not at the parking lot, but on the other side of the creek.
When crossing the highway bridge and turning to the Warden Cabin, you will find the path entrance.

As with most trails in the Mountain Parks, the scenery here is grand and beautiful.

Happy Trails, Martina
