Avalanche Conditions

Lots of fresh snow has fallen!
A scouting mission involved slow trail breaking in knee to thigh deep ski penetration (50+ cm).

At treeline and below, there is upright 5-20mm surface hoar that is highly reactive to skier traffic. Propagation would extend 5-20m. This surface hoar layer sits ~60cm down on the Dec 9th layer.

We kept away from any terrain capable of avalanching; staying in low angle, or extensive boulder fields.

With no alpine observations, that Dec 9th interface is a bit more of a mystery, but I'd expect extensive storm slabs.

There is about 1m snow at 1500m and 20-50 cm in denser mature forests at that elevation. Alder has now frozen upright and will require much more snow to flatten.

With the weekend coming, terrain choices may be challenging due to the lack of tree skiing and reactivity of the snow. Stay safe.
