Climbing Conditions

Climbing Conditions

We spent four days from July 8- 11 based out of Hermit Meadow. Weather was very hot above 20 degrees in the alpine with threatening afternoon thunderstorms that finally materialized on the evening of the 10th.

We chose to climb rock ridges Mount Tupper, West ridge and Hermit Mountain SE ridge because of the awful looking state of the Swiss Glacier descent from Mount Rogers/Grant col and Swiss/Truda col, photo attached. Those descents were deteriorating rapidly with lots of dirty ice showing, evidence of large amounts of rockfall and exposed crevasses.

Travel on the Tupper glacier was unsupportive with shallow footsteps in the morning to very wet with small streams running on the glacier in the afternoon. Most crevasses are visible with exposed ice but snow plugs remain in some areas. The snow that remains over these crevasses is very unsupportive and not to be trusted.

Both rock routes were dry and offered some very fun climbing on good rock.
