Climbing Conditions

Mostly dry, until the snow.

Rockies - Bass Buttress

Climbing Conditions

Climbed Bass Buttress today with fellow aspiring alpine guide Monte Johnston. The approach and climbing is dry until the last half of the last pitch, where it is quite wet and greasy. The post holing across to the descent gully was also fairly saturating, mostly knee deep, with several waist deep surprises. The descent gully itself has about a 100m of unavoidable snow before traversing over to the rappels that will likely stick around for a while. It was soft enough for easy plunge stepping, but an ice axe is highly recommend.
