Ski Conditions

Ski Conditions

We did the Little Sifton traverse today under overcast/obscured skies. After leaving Griz shoulder we experienced a few large whumphs approaching the ridge. These whumphs became less frequent as we worked up through the low angle terrain and we had none in the alpine. We chose a very conservative up track through the boulders into the basin below Lil Sifton peak. The snowpack felt generally strong with pole probing. 20cms of low density new snow was overlying a buried wind slab with no signs of instabilities. We dropped numerous chunks of cornice onto the pitch leading into the Hermit side with no results. Skiing into the Hermit was excellent albeit minimal visibility. Thin soft slabs were stubborn except for the steepest most unsupported roles failing down 15cms. Below treeline we had more whumphing.
