Climbing Conditions

I guided two clients on The Professor Falls today.

It was a quick approach by bike on the golf course road and golf cart trail, and hiking along the riverside trail. The riverside trail was pretty slick, with icy areas under 1-2cm’s of new snow.

Excellent ice conditions with steep pitches and fairly dry sticky ice that was not dripping much water.

We brought avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, probe, shovel).

We left the vehicles at 06:30. The wind picked up at noon as forecast, transporting snow at ridgetop and in the upper bowl and gully, and we started rappelling shortly after noon. We didn’t go to the final pitch.

There was one other party on the route, but the ice wasn’t brittle, and any falling ice stopped on the snow covered ice ledges between pitches.
