Great Skiing on North Aspects

Kananaskis Backcountry

Ski Conditions

We had some great skiing in the Hero Knob area today.

Solar aspects are crusty all the way up to ridge-top while true North aspects are holding soft snow all the way to valley bottom. Lots of people have been skiing along the Spray Lakes road lately but there is still lots of good skiing to be found.

We did not encounter any windslabs where we skied today, however, both yesterday and today I could see quite a bit of snow transport on alpine ridges. We triggered sloughs up to size 1.5 in steeper terrain. We did quite a few 'pole' tests during the day and although things are quite well settled for this time of year, the mid-pack is still quite variable with some surprisingly weak areas.

Of note, we did observe one deeper looking slab avalanche on a steep, alpine, ENE facing ridge above Spray Lakes that looked like it might have occurred in the last 48 hours or so. It was hard to say for sure with the flat light today but it looked like it had failed on one of the deep persistent weak layers from earlier this winter.
