Climbing Conditions

Parks Canada Visitor Safety and Alpine Helicopters responded to an incident on the ice climb "Sick Day" on Little Storm Mountain in Banff National Park today. A photo of the lower part of the climb is attached.

Several ice screws and draws were left on the climb. If anyone retrieves this gear in the next couple of weeks, you can drop it off at the Visitor Safety office in Banff and we will return it to its owners.

For directions to the office, call Banff dispatch on the non-emergency line at: 403-762-1470 and ask to speak with Visitor Safety.

The alpine in the Banff area has 10-25 cm of snow on North aspects, with a bit more in gullies and on ledges. Avalanche hazard is minimal at this time, but there is enough snow above 3000 m to consider avalanche hazard in your decision-making, and steep, narrow gullies could see sluffing with any additional snow.
