Fragile Large Cornices

Blackcomb Backcountry

Avalanche Conditions

I was out guiding this weekend (March 19 & 20) in the Blackcomb backcountry, and observed numerous large cornices separating from ridgelines and signs of very recent cornice failures. A notable area was the Decker Mtn zone, where we saw cornices cleaving from rock, creating 8+ metre deep moats on the ridgelines. We also saw numerous tracks climbing under and entering over these very weak cornices. It's not a matter of if, but when these hazards decide to vacate their very tenuous perches. With spring in the air and warm temperatures the norm, I would give these a wide berth!!
