Parks Canada occasionally closes the Field back road below Mt Dennis due to concerns about afternoon heat or rain causing natural avalanches to hit the road.

Several guides & climbers have asked about whether or not the ice climbs on Mt Dennis are still open during this time, particularly when the mornings are nice and cold. Here is what we have been telling people:

If the gate across the road is closed, the road is closed to all vehicle traffic. Pedestrians and ice climbers are still permitted to enter this area unless avalanche control is planned.

If avalanche control is planned the bright yellow avalanche control signs at each end of the road will be flipped down, as will the signs at the start of the Pilsner, Guinness and Carlsberg climbing trails. In this case please do not enter this area.
