Avalanche Conditions

Avalanche Conditions

I spent the day in the Norns Range yesterday and skied NE aspects between 2350m-1400m. HS ranged from 90cm to 130cm.

Winds from the northeast had affected exposed terrain above 2100m, but sheltered alpine terrain skied well.

There was evidence of natural avalanche activity within the past 96hrs on the November 21 (down 50-60cm) and December 05 (down 30-45cm) surface hoar layers below 1900m in open features to size 2.

Cold temperatures have faceted the storm snow above the December 5 layer making it less reactive to skier traffic, but we exercised caution in open areas below 2000m. Below 2000m in sheltered areas we observed surface hoar crystals up to 13mm. These were just buried last night.
