On a staff training in the South Coast Mountains around Duffey Lake, we hiked into Marriott Basin, spent some time there, and crossed over into the Cayoosh Valley. The trail into Marriott was snow free to the upper lake, then it had intermittent snow which made walking between the boulders treacherous. Work has been done to reroute the trail in this section away from the swampy meadows. It is still its muddy, poorly aligned self lower down. There are traces of a trail along Cayoosh Creek, but there is some large recent blowdown.
The snow line on northerly aspects was at about 1,800 m. The south aspects were bare to ridgetop outside big avalanche deposits.
There were still some cornices capable of producing size 2 avalanches in places. We saw little recent activity, but avoided being exposed to them. The snow on some steep slabby flanks was becoming hollow and we avoided that too.
The weather was very hot and melting was rapid. The toe of the Cayoosh Glacier was just becoming bare.
