Closure Lifted, Aug. 15th, 2022

Colin Range: Mt Colin and Mt Colin Centennial Hut (ACC)

Access

The closure in the Colin range of Jasper National Park, related to the recent illegal shooting of a bear in the area has been lifted and access for the Alpine Club Colin Hut and Mt Colin climbs is now open.

Wildlife Co-existence officers have been monitoring the area and have not been able to identify the bear to confirm its current state of health. Parks will keep monitoring reports from the area. If you are planning a trip or traveling through the area PC is reminding visitors that the Colin access trail is in a very active wildlife corridor in which all species of bears are frequently observed. It's now berry season too!

As a reminder, traveling in groups, making noise, keeping a clean campsite, and looking for fresh signs of bear activity as you hike will help protect you and our bears from a negative encounter. Bear spray is THE effective deterrent for a large predator encounter and your best chance for a positive outcome for all involved. Any firearms (illegal), bangers, and screamers are much less effective and may possibly start a fire in the region. There are no other travel or group size restrictions in place at this time.

Recommendations for the protection of bears and your safety can be found here: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/mtn/ours-bears
