Avalanche Conditions

Yesterday October 13th Fred Giroux and I went to the Crescent Towers via the Crescent Glacier in The Bugaboos.

At the Kain Hut there was around 30 of snow, increasing to 60-70cm on the Crescent Glacier. The snow was mostly unconsolidated with a sun crust observed in many areas up to at least 2700m. We also observed widespread surface hoar around 5mm up to 2600m elevation, in some places sitting on the sun crust. Winds were gusting up to around 30kph in the alpine as it started snowing in the morning, so a lot of the surface hoar probably got destroyed up high. Lower down there didn’t seem to be enough snow depth for the surface hoar to be much of a problem.

We did not observe any new avalanche activity, only old sluffing in the alpine.
