Note that the summer trail head location to the Bill Putnam (Fairy Meadow) Hut has changed. According to the Information sheet provided by the ACC, after travelling "about 65 km along the West Columbia Forest Service road is the turn-off marked as km 111.5 by a logging road marker." This junction is now marked as "63 KM" and has a small ACC sign underneath it. Turn left at this junction, and at 800 metres up this road turn right. However, within several hundred metres the road becomes overgrown and is impassible to all but foot traffic. The furthest you can drive up the road at this point is to GR 444411. The trail and old road are quite overgrown so expect to take more than the 5 hours to reach the hut that is suggested by the ACC.
