Went for a ski in the Emerald lake area today. Seems we were the first ones there in a while. Found about 120cm of snow at Treeline elevation with 50cm over the Dec 17th interface. Very little wind effect observed and amazing skiing.
There was a lot of whumpfing at the lower end of Treeline as we broke trail in a place that hadn't seen any previous traffic. At Treeline and upward the whumpfing mostly stopped and the snowpack felt a little less hollow. We had decent visibility and didn't observe any recent avalanches in the surrounding mountains.
We dug on a steep east aspect at 2100m in an opening in the trees. The height of snow here was 110cm and we got an ECTP 17 down 50cm on Dec 17th facets. (Extended Column Test propagated on the 17th loading step).
We skied mostly low angle slopes today and minimized our exposure to any big avalanche terrain due to the uncertainty surrounding the current Persistent & Deep Persistent slab problems.
