Avalanche Conditions

Skied the last two days in the Cariboos for Robson Backcountry Adventures: Thursday up at Belle Mtn and Friday up the Dore River Valley. At Belle, we had about 25 cms of snow on a widespread crust up to 2,100m with little wind effect on N-facing slopes in the ALP. We had mostly sunny skies until 15:00 with cool temepratures (-11C in the AM!) throughout the day and no wind.

There were no signs of instability in the ALP. At TL, where there was a thick crust under the new snow, we had several Sc sz 1 LD avalanches on slopes over 35 degrees. See photo. No slab avalanches were observed and the skiing was excellent. Weather rolled in at 17:00 and we exited on the sleds in whiteout conditions.

On Friday, we headed up the Dore River Valley and found dry snow starting at 1,500m and up. There was no wind effect in the high ALP except on S-facing slopes with 40-50cms of new snow on the glacier. We had mostly cloudy conditions with light snowfall and light SE winds all day. Glaciers had excellent coverage and skiing was fantastic. Moist snow began around 1650m at 15:00 and became wet and unskiable at 1,400m.

What a way to finish the ski season here in McBride!
