Climbing Conditions

Today Phil Widmer and I climbed the Beckey-Fuller route on Mt Tupper as far as the Tupper Traverse Ledge, then descended the West Ridge. We were unable to avoid some sections of wet rock on the lower part of the route, which made the climbing slow and challenging. The higher we got, the drier the rock got, and the upper mountain above the Tupper Traverse Ledge looked pretty dry.

We did not get an overnight freeze and the snow on the approach (starting right from the snow shed) was up to ankle deep. On the Tupper Traverse Ledge the snow was up to thigh deep, then often waist deep on the way down the Lone Pine slide path, until we got lower down where we found good boot skiing.

The West Ridge of Mt Tupper was in great shape below the Hermit Gendarme, and although we didn’t travel the upper section of the ridge it looked pretty dry to the summit.
