Trail Conditions

Hi folks,

A summary of a personal trip June 24-26, Northover Ridge circuit. We did the loop counter-clockwise, first camping at Three Isle Lake, then Aster Lake.

Trail conditions:

Mostly snow free. Evidence of rockfall along the basin in between Three Isle Lake and ridge access. We encountered snow when ascending the col (560675 622000) to gain the ridge route. Large cornices along the ridge, but none that extended onto the actual trail.

The descent off the ridge towards the North Over Tarns also had some snow, and again there was evidence of rockfall. Route finding descending into the Aster Basin may be the easier choice versus ascending it (completing the circuit in a clockwise direction).

Exiting via the Aster Lake Route, there is still a significant snow/ice lick above the upper waterfall draining off Mt. Sarrail. We found our mountaineering axes to be very valuable in this section, and a helmet for the remaining scree portion of the route would have made me a happier camper.

Camping:

Both campsites offered snow-free camping spots.

Other notes:

-Mosquitos were in full swarm around Hidden Lake.

-Grizzly digs were noted between the Forks and Three Isle Campgrounds, as well as just above Aster Lake campground. AB Parks at the time had a warning for bear activity in the Kananaskis Lakes vicinity.

Happy adventures!
