Trail Conditions

The ACMG Apprentice Hiking Guide group did a 3-day backpacking trip from Wasootch Ridge to the Nth Fork of Porcupine Creek.

The weather was seasonally warm with temps ranging from a high of 11 degrees to a low of 0 degrees. We observed light to moderate ridgetop winds from the SW. Clouds were scattered to overcast with no precipitation.

Travel conditions were variable depending on elevation and snow depth from last weeks storm. We found snow on all aspects above 2200m and down to1600m on north aspects. Snow depth was up to 10 cms and made for difficult travel in steep terrain with rock slabs and underbrush. We found dry travel conditions in the open forest and creek beds at lower elevations. Creek crossings in lower Porcupine, consisting of wobbly rock bridges and slippery logs, required caution.

Camping spots with a dependable water supply are limited. We found water at 1530m in the Sth Fork and at 1560m in the Nth Fork. There was minimal bear sign and little evidence of other wildlife in the area. Overall, we were all impressed with the changing fall colours and the spectacular ridgetop views.
