Numerous avalanches up to size 3 were observed from the road today, with crown depths reaching up to 1 metre and several showing wide propagation. At least one avalanche released on or near the ground—a clear signal that the recent cold temperatures have likely produced multiple weak layers, including facets buried under the storm snow and depth hoar at the base in some areas.
In White Pass, outflow winds have affected lower elevations, while ridgetop winds remain relatively light. Powder Valley received over 30 cm of snow over the weekend, with little to no wind effect observed across all elevations.
Another avalanche cycle is likely once winds begin to redistribute this available snow. As we step out after this storm, a cautious and inquisitive mindset will be essential.
