Ski Conditions

I was skiing in Connaught Creek today in the sunshine, but yesterday a friend and I climbed Youngs Peak from Asulkan Creek and skied the 7 Steps.

Glaciers:
There are many open crevasses on the Asulkan Glacier, especially on the lower part of the 7 Steps. A spot probe near an open crevasse around 2500m showed 195cm of snow.

Ski outs:
The ski out from Asulkan Creek is in similar condition to Connaught Creek, maybe a little worse as could be expected. In general they're both decent for this time of year, just the odd rock or creek crossing to watch out for.

Ski conditions:
In the alpine, the skiing is really nice powder on all aspects with a decent base, except some places where it's wind affected from last night.
At tree-line the coverage is pretty good for this time of year, with a hard base formed from refrozen snow that now has at least 30cm of settled powder on top.
Below tree-line, the snow carries much better than the snow depth would suggest due to the refrozen snow as a base. It is rare to punch through, although there are a lot of early season hazards like deadfall, alder and rocks. I wouldn't recommend tree skiing yet, except possibly open glades near tree-line and meadows.
