ACMG Hiking Guide Exam

ACMG TAP Hiking Exam completed a backpacking trip in the Dogtooth Mountains, between Quartz and Gorman Lakes.

Quartz Lake trail is in good condition, with some deadfall that can be easily crossed. There were some wet, muddy sections near Lower Quartz Lake. Gorman Lake Trail is in good condition. There are 2 trails on the south side of Gorman Lake. The one closer to the lake is narrow and exposed to overhead hazards. The upper trail (cairned) is wider and a better choice. Quartz Creek FSR is accessible by low clearance vehicle if cautious. Gorman Lake FSR is rough and requires high clearance 4x4.

The group experienced a wide range of weather conditions from +20C and sun to -8C and blowing snow. The snow began on the 18th, making vegetation and boulders slippery and a chilly final night camping.

Terrain travelled included large talus slopes on western alpine aspects, making for challenging travel (e.g., large, unstable boulders). A large rockfall event was noted, initiating in steep cliffs.

We did not see any wildlife, but we saw tracks of moose, bear, and wolf. We noted multiple bear scats and massive diggings. Pica’s were very vocal. Alpine flowers have faded, but the fall colors were very nice. Given the dry summer, we were pleasantly surprised to find water at all chosen campsites.

Of note, we found a large quantity of discarded beer cans and other garbage along the route, especially in the Lang Creek area. We carried out a substantial amount.
