Trail Conditions

Hi Everyone,
I just returned from a quick trip into the Tonquin Valley in Jasper National Park, and have a few conditions observations to share (approaching via the Astoria River Trail and passing through the Astoria, Switchback, Clitheroe, and Surprise Point Campgrounds).

Trail conditions are quite variable with many stretches of nice dry trail, mixed with perennially soggy sections (in some places with mud up to boot-top height). Several creek crossings were difficult to manage without a wee bit of boot-soaking, and there were still patches of (mostly supportive) snow along the trail between Switchback and Clitheroe Campgrounds. The connector trail between Clitheroe and Surprise Point Campgrounds had many snowy patches and sustained soggy sections when approaching Amethyst Lakes.

Amethyst Lakes were still holding a thin layer of ice, and The Ramparts remain quite snowy (see attached pictures). On the bright side, recently chilly temperatures have lead to less mosquitoes than are typically found in the Tonquin this time of year.

As usual for the Tonquin Valley, a good pair of sturdy waterproof boots are highly recommended.
Happy Trails,
Ben
