Day late due to operational distractions, Sorry.
Visitor Safety responded to a call for overdue climbers on Mt Athabasca Monday. The team of two reported deep trail breaking, white-out conditions and new cornice development on North aspects, above 2700ms (Ramp elevation). Over the weekend, as much as 20cms of snow fell, overlying the saturated, wet summer snow in the Alpine. The resulting new load triggered a significant avalanche cycle. Loose wet and point releases up to sz 2.5 were observed on all aspects in the Alpine including all slopes leading off the AA glacier towards the AA Col, Andromeda North Basin, Silverhorn, North bowl, Hour Glass slopes and traveling well across normal access routes to the North Bowl and ramp routes. Weak overnight recoveries also making for slushy travel conditions on the Boundary glacier and A2.
Stay Safe out there Folks!
