Avalanche Conditions

I was up at the ice-fields on Tuesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd.

The approach moraines are free of snow but marginal freezes overnight made for post holing from shin to waist deep in wet snow on the glaciers below 2700m . On Tuesday we attempted Asteroid Alley but retreated at the top of the snow slopes due to increasing rock fall hazard. On Tuesday we climbed the North Ridge of Athabasca. The snow pockets along the ridge had a breakable crust over sugary unconsolidated snow which gave us the spooks. Instead of climbing what might of been easier snow slopes we stuck to the rock. Above 3100m the snow had a 30cm supportive crust with dry sugar-snow underneath. The only wind-slabs we observed were on the summit ridge of Athabasca and easily managed. We descended the AA-col.

We did observe several recent wet point release avalanches in the alpine up to size 2.0 along the 3000m elevation band on all aspects. Most noticeably in the North-West Bowl separating Andromeda and Athabasca off of steep rocks. Pictures attached. Also attached is a picture of A-strain and the AA-Col.
