Avalanche Problem 1: Storm Slabs




- Be aware of the potential for wide propagations.
- If triggered the wind slabs may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.
Avalanche Problem 2: Persistent Slabs




Several deeply buried persistent weak layers have become reactive with the new snow load. If these layers are triggered the resulting avalanches will have the potential to reach the full extent of their run-out zones, possibly even further.

Numerous natural and artillery controlled avalanches to sz 4.0 occurred during Thursdays storm. Several ran full extent, taking out mature trees. Yesterday avalanche control just west of the park produced more large destructive size 4 avalanches piling debris 10-15m deep. Snowpack Summary
Approximately 60cm of new snow in the past 3 days has settled into a widespread storm slab. Strong winds in the alpine have created variable wind slab in the alpine and in exposed areas at treeline. Dec and Jan persistent weak layers are now buried 150-200cm in the snowpack. Height of snow is 350cm at Treeline.

The last storm brought over 60cm of snow in 48hrs. In the alpine, mod winds have built windslab. If triggered these slabs will propagate very wide. Cornices have also grown in size & become more fragile in the last week, give them a wide berth!
