Avalanche Conditions

Avalanche Conditions

The strong influx of solar radiation and warm temperatures is causing a widespread avalanche cycle in the Kananaskis Region at this time. Over the past 24hrs we have seen numerous sz 3 avalanches a few larger avalanches that have been failing to ground with fracture depths of up to 2m and fracture widths of up to 1km. Keep an eye on overhead terrain as a few of the avalanches observed have slid down below treeline into terrain that is snow free where hiking is common. Also if you plan on scrambling, be aware that there is still lots of snow in Alpine terrain along the front ranges so make sure you are thinking about avalanches and avalanche potential as it relates to overhead terrain.
