Climbing Conditions

The ACMG TAP just finished the 2 day snow and ice CPD at the Columbia Icefields. Temps were warm with minimal overnight recovery. The lingering winter conditions up there meant that the snow coverage was more like early May type.conditions with treeline elevations still sporting 1m + HS.

Wet loose activity on solar aspects was noted in steep rocky terrain starting around 11am and we directly observed 2 wet slab avalanches today, the most notable one being a size 3 deep persistent failure on the SE slopes of the NE ridge of Snowdome (see photo). A good reminder that there are some very real avalanche concerns lingering and to choose your objectives carefully.

It’s a late start to the summer alpine climbing season and folks are still moving around on skis up there.
