Winter snow up high on Mt English

Ski Conditions

Went up to Mount English via a helidrop to ski tour on its northerly aspects to celebrate my birthday with friends, 4-20 Yes!
We found excellent predictable powder skiing from 2200m to 2600m. Temperature hovered around -5, felt colder higher up in the wind but much warmer lower in sheltered locations. An easterly wind came and went at ridge top, with very little impact on ski quality. Some convective clouds rolled over the ridges but was mostly limited to the solar sides.
Ski pen was roughly 15-20cm and boot pen was 40cm.
A test profile on a NE asp at 2500m on a 30 deg slope produced an easy shear down 38cm on facets sitting on a thin windslab.
This instability could linger for a while so assess your steeper lines carefully.
We avoided any steeper convexities and stuck to lower angle planar slopes for a stress free day. We looked at the tempting steeper exit lines to valley bottom but it was an easy decision to leave them be, this time...
Winter conditions up high continue!
