Good Ice Conditions

Gibraltar Wall - Rockies

Climbing Conditions

Hi all,

I guided 2 guests up Gibraltar wall Sunday February 6, 2021.

We had sunny skies, light northwest winds and temperatures ranging from -12C to -7C. There was about 20cm of snow on the ground in this area of the Western Rockies. We climbed the left-hand route in 5 pitches and found generally good plastic ice and adequate protection, it felt like WI4. Thinner ice was found near the top of the last pitch.

The access road from Canal Flats is in good shape, it has seen lots of traffic and is suitable for SUV type vehicles. A VHF radio is recommended and the designated frequency is RR3. Conditions will likely change with the cold temperatures this week however, the route is South facing and in full sun by 10am.

Keep warm and enjoy the sun!
