A group of us skied both East and West aspects between 2170m and 1260m today in Glacier National Park. There was up to 60cm of recent storm snow atop the Nov. 5th crust and facets. Slab properties as well as some propagation was observed due to skier traffic at an elevation of 1930m where the storm snow existed as a more cohesive slab and perhaps the facets were more developed. We noticed whumphing in low angle terrain between 1500m and 1980m. We also decided to stay away from shallow steep terrain at ridge top where the Nov. 5 crust was weak, and the snowpack felt variable. Snowpack depth ranged from 45cm at highway elevations and 120cm at our high point. Ski quality deteriorated as we approached the valley bottom where a firm crust and shallow buried obstacles kept us skiing conservatively. Overall good quality sliding for this time of year.
