Fresh Snow In The Rockies - Lake O’Hara Area

Mount Schaffer, Lake O’Hara, Yoho National Park

Climbing Conditions

I guided the North Ridge of Mount Shaffer yesterday (September 25th). There was fresh snow down to the Lake O’Hara elevation, but it was less than 1cm of graupel. Higher up there is 5-15 cm of snow in the area (see photos). The larches are in prime colour.

We had originally planned to climb Grassi Ridge, but with the recent snow we opted for Mt Shaffer. It climbed well, feeling like early winter conditions. We chatted with a photographer at Shaffer Lake on our descent, who showed us photos of a wolverine that had been running across the scree slope above Shaffer Lake.
