Avalanche Conditions

Eric O and I teamed up to guide a trip around the French Haig Robertson loop in kananaskis country.

10 to 15 cm of new snow brought the recent snowfall in the area to 30 to 50cm which tapered rapidly with elevation. Recent strong south westerly winds have moved this snow around forming wind slabs up to 90cm in places. We saw a size 1.5 wind slab avalanche released likely in the last 24hours and were able to ski cut size 1 slabs on steep lee features at ridge tops. Also of note this new snow sits on a variety of sun crusts on solar aspects which will become more of a hazard when it settles into a slab.

Great dry powder skiing on the north aspects!
