Avalanche Conditions

Beautiful sport climbing conditions midday today on Tunnel Mountain's Black Band. Warm, mostly dry rock and no rockfall observed. Obvious concern was the icy trails. Sidewalk spikes would have been a good idea there and in lots of other places too probably. My more subtle concern upon reflection was that the 6 weeks of deep freeze may have loosened some even bigger blocks than usual. I am thinking about pulling gently and placing my belay or belayer extra carefully for awhile when in big block country.

At O'Hara it was obvious the avalanche forecast was correct. LOTS of avalanche activity from shallow snowpack areas below the ice climbs on Wiwaxy and on the big deep snow rigs like Mt. Huber.

Given the weather forecast it could be big avalanches and dry rock for a few days.
